Shechem, modern Nablus, is the first city Abraham reached when he began his sojourn in the land of Canaan (Genesis 12:6). It is also where Jacob camped after forging a reconciliation with his brother Esau and “erected an altar, calling it El-Elohe Yisrael, ‘God, the God of Israel,’” (Genesis 33:18–20).
