Jerusalem—The steep walls of “Warren’s Shaft,” carved by the Jebusites before the 10th century B.C., challenge even the most agile. Joab, David’s general, may have gained access to Jebusite Jerusalem through this shaft, thereby allowing the Israelites to conquer the city.

Down this shaft vessels were lowered into the spring water at bottom. Thus, by entering a horizontal tunnel which connected to the top of the shaft and opened behind the city wall the residents of Jebusite Jerusalem could obtain water without venturing outside their walls.
