The remote desert caves of Qumran hid the Dead Sea Scrolls for nearly 2000 years until a bedouin shepherd accidentally discovered them in 1947. The inset illustrates a portion of the great Isaiah Scroll (55:8–57:2 column 46, 1QIsa) with one of the many cross-marks drawn in the margins of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Such X-marks were put in the margins by the Qumran scribes to draw attention to messianic passages.
