James L. Starkey headed a British expedition which conducted large scale excavations at Tel Lachish between 1932 and 1938. Rarely photographed, he is shown here in the expedition camp. His excavation was one of the largest and most methodical carried out in Palestine before World War II. It came to an abrupt halt in 1938 when Starkey was murdered while en route to the opening ceremony of the Palestine Archaeological Museum (known today as the Rockefeller Museum in east Jerusalem).
