The Public Building or Synagogue at Gamla: Archaeologist Shmaryahu Guttman decided to dig at this site because it fit the description of Gamla by the first-century historian, Flavius Josephus. This large black basalt structure, with interior benches and columns now lies in ruins, probably destroyed by the Roman assault on the Jewish town in 67 A.D.
