Salvage Operation. Decades of illicit digging and tomb robbing have turned the once-barren wilderness southeast of the Dead Sea into a seemingly endless lunar landscape of craters and upturned spoil heaps. During his 30 years spent working in the Safi region, however, Politis has managed to salvage more than 400 of the Greek and Aramaic tombstones that have been looted from the ancient cemetery.
