THE REMNANTS. When the codex arrived in Jerusalem in late 1957, only 294 pages of the original 490 pages were included. All extant pages of the codex were complete, with no missing text or fire damage, suggesting that whoever gathered up the remains of the codex might have not bothered saving the fragments.

Fragments of other codex pages have surfaced, however. A page from the Book of Jeremiah appears to have been cut deliberately by a sharp tool. Even after the six fragments were glued back together, a third of the page is still missing.
