A great deal of information about the exile of Israelites in Assyria is provided by Assyrian documents, including clay prisms, cylinders and cones. The so-called Nimrud Prism, now in the British Museum, contains Sargon’s boast that he repopulated Samaria after deporting its Israelite inhabitants. “I brought into [Samaria] people from countries conquered by my hands,” the text reads. “I appointed my eunuch as governor over them. And I counted them as Assyrians.”
