The majestic Colosseum has stood for nearly 2,000 years as one of Rome’s most recognizable—and most visited—landmarks. This ancient amphitheater still draws crowds, but few of them notice the block of stone sitting in one of the theater’s entryways as they pass by it on their way inside (see photograph). The inscriptions on the stone may suggest how the Colosseum’s massive construction effort was financed.
