Draped in pantaloons and turbans, a group of 19th-century Ashkelonites socialize in the foreground; the remains of the city’s former grandeur lie in the distance. The scene, which shows remains no longer extant, was captured in 1839 by Scottish artist David Roberts and is one of a series of hand-painted lithographs he published in 1855 based on a tour of the Holy Land.
