The Siq, a twisting mile-long defile, gives passage into the most famous of all Nabatean sites, Petra. With inward-curving rock walls that soar to more than 300 feet in places, the cleft sometimes narrows to lime more than a slit, providing only enough room for a single file of visitors riding donkeys. At the end of the tunnel-like trek, shown here, the Treasury of the Pharaoh (see front cover) rewards the hardy visitor.
