Readers of BAR have seen many distinguished scholars debate about the correct interpretation of the site of Khirbet Qumran in the pages of our magazine. Dr. Katharina Galor (Brown University) and Dr. Jürgen Zangenberg (Leiden University) reflected on the situation in the introduction to their recent book with Jean-Baptiste Humbert, The Site of the Dead Sea Scrolls: Archaeological Interpretations and Debates (Brill, 2006):
Perhaps it is a good thing that for a certain time there is more controversy than consensus, more confusion than comfort. Even if an exchange of ideas with a scholar holding an opposing view is at times difficult, we should not cease dialogue. The deep differences in our approaches force all of us to reassess our own position.
